About the area

About Vågsøy OUTER NORDFJORD When you travel via Stryn and out along the Nordfjord towards the outer Nordfjord, you will have many fantastic nature experiences that will take the breath away from even the most discerning tourist. Majestic mountains, deep, green waters, roaring waterfalls, mighty glaciers between green valleys, and the blue, glittering fjord that cuts into the beautiful West Norwegian nature. Experience glacier climbing, rock climbing, short and long mountain hikes to high and famous peaks, fjord horse riding, summer ski center, etc. In the outer Nordfjord lie the municipalities of Selje, Bremanger and Vågsøy. Vågsøy municipality, Kannesteinen and the lighthouses If you follow the cozy, narrow, winding road about 10 km west from Måløy, past Torskangerpollen, you will eventually end up in the idyllic, small village of Oppedal. Here lies Kannesteinen, the very symbol of Vågsøy. Through thousands of years, the sea has polished the stone, so that it today has this special appearance. Out here in the area around Kannesteinen there is a very special light, and a wonderful calm. Here you can truly find peace in your soul. Vågsøy municipality has four lighthouses on the steepest cliffs, with roaring sea as their closest neighbor. Best known is Kråkenes lighthouse on the northernmost and most weather-beaten place on the island. Standing at a safe distance from the raging waves on a stormy day and admiring the turbulent sea is a fantastic experience. Selje municipality, Vestkapp – Stadt The Stadhavet is notorious among seafarers and it often happens that ships have to stay there for several days waiting for good enough weather to cross Stad. The Vestkapp plateau, Norway’s westernmost mainland point, towers 497 meters directly above the raging sea. Stadlandet is a long peninsula in Selje municipality. Most of the southern coastline consists of cliffs and scree up to a plateau that mostly lies between three and five hundred meters above sea level. The landscape on Stadlandet is hilly and rounded with heather moors and grasslands. It stands in stark contrast to the dramatic cliffs and scree down towards the fjord in the south. This open treeless landscape has been created by humans through burning and grazing over many hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. This is an unusual landscape in Norway. Dragseidet is known for boats in ancient times being dragged over land between Drage in the south and Leikanger by Vanylvsfjorden in the north to avoid the perilous sea journey over the treacherous Stadhavet, where many a boat has gone down through the ages. Selje monastery Legend tells of the king’s daughter Sunniva who suffered martyrdom on the island of Selja. The rumor of her wisdom and beauty led a heathen king to propose to her, but the Christian Sunniva refused and had to flee, coming to Selja. Out here on Selja you will find the cave where she hid from her persecutors, and later died. Here are also the ruins of a church and the Benedictine monastery from 1103. Selje became one of the first bishoprics in the country and at Dragseidet one can still find traces from the time when Olav Tryggvason Christianized men from four counties here in 997. Beautiful sandy beaches In Selje town center you will find a white sandy beach reminiscent of a southern beach. Along the hillsides in the flat and wide village of Hoddevik lies Hoddeviksanden, a beautiful beach with sand dunes and is a paradise for surfers. Ervikstranden is a wide, shallow sandy beach where the open sea washes over the sand. Here is also an idyllic small cemetery and the beautiful Ervikkirken, which was built in memory of the wartime shipwreck here in 1943. Bremanger municipality, Hornelen and Grotlesanden At the very end of Nordfjord, where fjord meets ocean, you will find Bremanger municipality. High, steep mountains, blue-white glaciers, narrow fjord arms, many fish-rich inland lakes, pristine white sandy beaches and several exciting islands. Hornelen, Northern Europe’s highest sea cliff, rises majestically 860 m directly from the sea. Out here in Skatestraumen also lies the largest German coastal fort in Sogn og Fjordane, Tongane Coastal Fort from World War II. The fishing village of Kalvåg is the largest and best preserved fishing village in Western Norway, with the beautiful Vamråkbuene lined up along the sea. On the island of Bremangerlandet lies Grotlesanden, one of Norway’s finest bathing beaches with a 2 km long fine-grained white sand beach. Vingen is one of Northern Europe’s largest and most special rock carving sites with 1000-1500 figures, 4000-6000 years old. The Myklebustdalen Nature Reserve (along Rv614) has special rock formations, lush nature, great hiking terrain and excellent opportunities for freshwater fishing. About Sogn og Fjordane Sogn og Fjordane is traditionally divided into three regions named after the three largest fjords – Nordfjord, Sunnfjord and Sognefjorden. The latter is one of the world’s longest fjords, a sparkling blue and green majestic fjord, cutting its way between high mountains with green wooded slopes. Small, fertile Sogne villages, with thousands of fruit trees with white and pink blossoms, cling to the foot of the mountains and the fjord. In Sunnfjord you will find two of the three towns in the county, Florø and Førde, with shopping opportunities, museums and restaurants. Out by the coast you will find thousands of islands that provide good shelter for fishing and boating, while the inland areas have many lakes and rivers, also with good fishing opportunities. In Nordfjord you will find a wealth of activity opportunities such as glacier climbing, rock climbing, mountain hikes, fjord horse riding and summer ski center. At the very end of the region you will find sandy beaches, good fishing opportunities, surfing and steep sea cliffs. Read more about fish species in Northern Fjord-Norway
